CLARKSVILLE, TN (December 2, 2024) – Tennova Healthcare - Clarksville and Tennova Surgery - Clarksville now offers laparoscopic and robotic anti-reflux procedures to combat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other chronic conditions causing heartburn. The Tennova Heartburn Care Center offers relief without the need for daily medication.
According to the National Institute of Health, approximately 20% of Americans suffer from GERD, a long-lasting condition in which gastroesophageal reflux causes repeated symptoms that are bothersome or can lead to complications. Without treatment, GERD can sometimes cause complications such as esophagitis, esophageal stricture and Barrett’s esophagus, as well as complications outside of the esophagus.
Ronald Atwater, Jr., M.D., general surgeon, shares “With chronic acid reflux disease impacting so many, these procedures can make a major impact on the quality of life for those suffering. We are proud to add this new technology along with other procedures offered to treat reflux disease as we strive to continuously provide quality care to our patients.”
Surgical procedures offered include the transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF), the EndoFLIP (endoluminal functional lumen imaging probe) test, as well as treatment of both hiatal and paraesophageal hernias.
The TIF procedure allows the surgeon to reconstruct the valve between the stomach and esophagus. The TIF device is inserted through the mouth and into the esophagus, and the endoscope is passed through the TIF device. TIF is less invasive than surgery because there are no incisions and may offer a faster recovery time.
The EndoFLIP test measures pressure, area, and movement inside a gastrointestinal organ. A catheter is inserted through the mouth and into the esophagus, where a balloon is inflated with fluid to contain specialized sensors. Information obtained through the test can be beneficial for diagnosing and treating swallowing difficulties, esophageal achalasia, and other motility problems.
“The Tennova Heartburn Center brings together the expertise of both gastroenterology and surgery to find the best plan of action for our patients” states Drew Emery, CEO. “This center allows patients in our community treatment options closer to home.”
