Tennova Healthcare – Clarksville Increases Robotic Surgical Technology

Clarksville, TN - Shorter hospital stays, reduced pain and discomfort, and smaller incisions can be some of the benefits of robotic surgery, and now Tennova Healthcare - Clarksville is bringing its second robotic surgical system online, allowing surgeons greater access to the technology. Minimally invasive techniques are advanced through the use of robotic assisted equipment, allowing surgeons to perform more complex procedures.
Robotic surgical systems provide minimally invasive surgical options for a variety of procedures in the areas of gynecology, urology, and general surgery. Robotic surgery can be performed through smaller incisions than open surgery. The robot doesn’t replace the surgeon, but provides sharper, high-definition detail and a 360-degree view of the surgery site, as well as greater dexterity in navigating complex anatomical structures. The robotic surgical system translates the surgeon’s hand movements in real time, bending and rotating the instruments while performing the procedure. The tiny wristed instruments move like a human hand, but with a greater range of motion.
Dr. David Price, chief medical advisor and general surgeon states: ““With robotic surgery, the time for hospitalization or need for admission can be significantly reduced. With a traditional surgery, patients could stay up to fourteen days in the hospital. When done robotically and with special protocols used today, patients often will be hospitalized for only a few days, returning home with much less pain, requiring less pain medication, and with much more strength.”
Dr. Price adds, “Some patients are concerned that the cost of general surgery procedures may be increased using the robot. That is usually not the case. There is generally no increased costs for cases that a general surgeon performs robotically.”
At Tennova Healthcare – Clarksville, surgeons perform more than 270 procedures each year using robotic surgery. With added access to this technology, Tennova will be able to provide enhanced care for our patients seeking surgery.
